Retinol and Retinoids
Retinol is the gold standard of topical anti-ageing. It converts in the skin to retinoic acid, which stimulates collagen synthesis, accelerates cell turnover, and inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) — the enzymes responsible for breaking down existing collagen and elastin.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology confirmed OTC retinol significantly improves photoaged skin — reducing fine lines and improving texture after 12–24 weeks of consistent use. Prescription tretinoin works faster and more potently but requires a GP or dermatologist referral in Australia.
Starting guide: 0.025–0.05 per cent retinol, 2–3 nights weekly, building frequency gradually over 8–12 weeks. Always apply in the evening. Always follow the next morning with SPF.
Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C is the most important morning anti-ageing serum ingredient. It functions as a direct antioxidant, neutralising free radicals from UV exposure, and as an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis — the body cannot produce stable collagen without it.
Effective vitamin C serums contain L-ascorbic acid at 10–20 per cent. Formulation and packaging matter as much as concentration — vitamin C oxidises rapidly when exposed to air and light. Avoid serums that have turned yellow or dark orange; the active ingredient has likely degraded. Look for airless pumps or opaque packaging.

AHAs and Exfoliating Acids

Common Mistakes With Anti-Ageing Serums
Using too much retinol too quickly. Starting at full strength 7 nights a week causes significant irritation, barrier damage, and people abandoning a genuinely effective ingredient. Start at 2–3 nights weekly with the lowest available concentration.
Applying hyaluronic acid to dry skin. In low-humidity environments (common in many parts of Australia), HA applied to dry skin with no occlusion can pull moisture from the dermis rather than drawing it in. Always apply to damp skin and follow with moisturiser.
Expecting overnight results. Retinol takes 12–24 weeks to produce measurable visible improvement. Vitamin C takes 4–8 weeks. Switching serums every few weeks means never giving any single ingredient time to actually work.
Using expired vitamin C. A serum that has turned yellow-orange to brown has oxidised and lost its efficacy. Vitamin C serums have a shorter active shelf life than most skincare products — typically 3–6 months after opening.
Skipping SPF when using retinol. Retinol increases photosensitivity. Using it without daily SPF counteracts much of its benefit by allowing increased UV damage during the day.
