Step 1 — Identify your skin type. Your skin type determines the texture that will work best — not the active ingredient inside.

Step 3 — Check the ingredient list position. The key active should appear in the upper half of the INCI list (before the 1 per cent threshold). If retinol appears seventh from the bottom of a 30-ingredient list, it’s at a concentration too low to be clinically meaningful.
Step 4 — Check the packaging. Retinol in a clear jar with a wide lid will oxidise and lose efficacy quickly. Look for opaque, airless, or pump dispensers for any retinol or vitamin C-containing cream.
Step 5 — Assess fragrance. “Parfum” or “fragrance” on the label indicates added fragrance — one of the most common irritants in skincare. Fragrance-free formulations are safer for sensitive, reactive, and compromised skin.

Common Mistakes With Anti-Ageing Creams
Choosing based on price alone. Price correlates with marketing spend more reliably than active ingredient quality or concentration.
Skipping SPF and relying on an SPF moisturiser. SPF moisturisers are not designed to be applied in the quantities needed for adequate UV protection (around 5 mL for the face and neck). Use a dedicated sunscreen over your anti-ageing moisturiser.
Using too much product. A 5-cent piece-sized amount for the face and neck is generally sufficient for most creams. Using more doesn’t produce faster results and can cause pilling under makeup or SPF.
Ignoring patch testing. Any new active should be patch-tested on the inner forearm for 48 hours before use on the face, particularly for retinol or AHA-containing formulas.
Mixing incompatible actives. Applying a retinol cream immediately after an AHA toner dramatically increases irritation risk. Separate actives to different times or alternate nights.
