Truly zero-energy foods are uncommon, but zero-energy beverages such as plain water do exist. Most things people search for as “zero-calorie snacks” are better described as near-zero or very-low-energy foods: cucumber, celery, leafy greens, unsweetened tea and black coffee. The practical question is not whether zero exists, but how close you can get while still eating something.

The idea of a zero-calorie snack is appealing and, in most versions, misleading. Plain water genuinely contains no energy, and the Australian Food Composition Database lists it at 0kJ. Every solid food you actually chew contains some energy, even if the amount is small enough to be irrelevant in practice.

That said, the category of near-zero-calorie foods is real, useful, and genuinely underutilised by most Australians. Understanding what is actually negligible in energy — and what merely claims to be — is the goal of this guide.

How Close to Zero Can You Actually Get?

Rather than arguing about whether zero exists, it is more useful to know which band a food sits in. This is the classification used throughout our snack guides.

The “Negative Calorie” Myth: Debunked

The negative calorie concept holds that some foods cost more energy to digest than they provide. It is biologically implausible. Digestion does consume energy, an effect known as the thermic effect of food, but it represents only a fraction of the energy a food contains. Reported ranges vary with protein type, dose and study conditions, but the broad pattern is consistent:

  • 20–30% of protein’s calorie content
  • 5–10% of carbohydrates
  • 0–3% of fat

For celery (approximately 50kJ per 4 stalks), the thermic effect of digestion is around 5–10kJ — not the 50+ kJ the myth claims. Celery does not cause negative energy balance on its own.

What Near-Zero-Calorie Snacks Are Actually Good For

Near-zero-calorie foods serve three practical purposes that make them genuinely useful despite their inability to manage real hunger:

  1. Habitual snacking management. Many people snack out of habit, boredom, or anxiety rather than genuine hunger. Substituting a habitual reach for chips or biscuits with herbal tea, sparkling water, or a small serve of raw vegetables satisfies the act of eating or drinking without meaningful energy contribution.
  2. Volume eating as part of a meal. Adding large volumes of near-zero-calorie vegetables to a meal (a large salad base, a cup of broth before eating, raw vegetables as a starter) increases stomach volume and triggers satiety signals before the main caloric content of the meal is consumed.
  3. Bridging short gaps. A cup of herbal tea or miso soup between meals at a time when genuine hunger is not present — but the urge to eat something is — is a reasonable tool without any nutritional downside.

Diet Soft Drinks: What the Evidence Says What they do well: diet soft drinks carry substantially less energy than sugar-sweetened versions, typically 4 to 20kJ per can against roughly 600kJ. As a straight swap they remove a meaningful amount of energy. What they don’t do: replace an overall healthy eating pattern. The World Health Organization advises against relying on non-sugar sweeteners as a strategy for controlling body weight, though it describes that recommendation as conditional and notes it is not a safety assessment. Long-term effects remain an active research area, so treat them as a transition tool rather than a solution.
